A cucumber mask must be one of the most basic and well loved facial treatments of all times. Everybody we know, including us, loves the cucumber and its cooling, hydrating and soothing effect on the skin. It is a worldwide favorite for people who want to pamper themselves
And everyone, and that includes you, can enjoy a relaxing and satisfying natural spa experience right there in your own home with these cucumber masks. It's all made clear; these face mask recipes are as simple as ABC, affordable or downright cheap and you probably have the ingredients already somewhere in your kitchen cabinets
We have the recipe you bring the energy …and the ingredients, a food processor or mixing bowl of course
Why a cucumber mask, what’s in it for me …or my skin?
Even the shortlist of cucumber benefits could fill a page so we will keep it short here. If you want to find out more about what it does to you skin as an active ingredient in do-it-yourself facial masks, visit our homemade facial mask basics page by clicking on the link. There you will also find out more about the many other possible ingredients and ways to combine them into your own signature facial mask recipe
In short cucumber hydrates, softens, relaxes, it strengthens your connective skin tissue, prevents water retention and reduces swelling, relieves you from irritations, soothes sunburns, cools you down, cleans, feeds, reads a bedtime story, tucks you in and kisses you good night…well almost, anyway this sounds like one "mother" of a skin care ingredient
The cucumber by itself or cucumber extract is also a main ingredient in many exclusive and, many times, even expensive store bought facial masks
Which made us think again, if cucumber is such an effective face mask ingredient, why not stay close to the source? It's so easy to take one or two extra organic cucumbers in our shopping basket on our weekly trip to the supermarket or health food store…remind you organic still is THE way to go, at least if you want maximum benefit from your do it yourself cucumber mask. Non organic cucumbers should be more seriously washed and slightly scrubbed
Endless possibilities
We listed a few of the sheer endless possibilities you have using this "magic" ingredient in do it yourself facial mask recipes. We start with the very basic cucumber mask and build it from there. Cucumber simply goes together well with almost every potential face mask ingredient you can think of
Some useful tips
Before applying any facial mask clean your face and neck with fresh water. Take off all cosmetics, creams, lotions, in short: everything. Use a non abrasive, non aggressive soap if necessary. When finished, pat your skin dry
Even better is to take a hot shower or a steam bath to clean and open up your pores. For some useful steam bath suggestions & tips check our steam bath page
When you have applied the cucumber mask of choice make sure you take your time to lie down, place a towel under your head and neck. Put 2 cucumber slices on your eyes; or use 2 used and cooled down chamomile teabags (our personal favorite!) or 2 cotton pads soaked in rose or lavender water
But most important:
Think positive, happy thoughts and relax... this is actually half of the secret of these recipes!
