(Jello facial mask)

Not so many people know yet of the effectiveness AND the fun of making and using a gelatine face mask. Well maybe you and we can change that. It is an underestimated but very useful ingredient to use when making face masks

And everyone, and that includes you, can enjoy a relaxing and satisfying natural spa experience right there in your own home with these jello or gelatine face masks. It's all made clear; these face mask recipes are as simple as ABC, affordable or downright cheap and you probably have the ingredients already somewhere in your kitchen cabinets

We have the recipe you bring the energy
…and the ingredients, a food processor or mixing bowl of course

Why a gelatine face mask, what’s in it for me
…or my skin?

Gelatin is made of animal collagen and that's why it is so effective in natural skin care. It helps build your collagen best when you take it as a food but when applied on your skin it also has proven to be very helpful

When you have applied it to your facial skin it will bind with the dead skin cells and oil that clogs your pores, clearing your skin when you peel it off. This is also why gelatin has a softening effect on your skin and as it dries it will also help to firm and tone

If you want to find out more about Gelatin or Jello as an active ingredient in do-it-yourself facial masks visit our homemade facial mask basics page by clicking on the link. There you can also find out more about many other possible ingredients and ways to combine them into your own signature facial mask recipe

Some useful tips

Before applying any facial mask clean your face and neck with fresh water. Take off all cosmetics, creams, lotions, in short: everything. Use a non abrasive, non aggressive soap if necessary. When finished, pat your skin dry

Even better is to take a hot shower or a steam bath to clean and open up your pores. For some useful steam bath suggestions & tips check our steam bath page

When you have applied the gelatin face mask of choice make sure you take your time to lie down, place a towel under your head and neck. Put 2 cucumber slices on your eyes; or use 2 used and cooled down chamomile teabags (our personal favorite!) or 2 cotton pads soaked in rose or lavender water

But most important:

Think positive, happy thoughts and relax...
this is actually half of the secret of these recipes!

Making face masks

Basic Fruit juice, Gelatine face mask
(For all skin types)

A very simple peel off gelatine face mask. It feeds, softens, firms and tones your skin

What do you need:

  • 1 packet unflavored Gelatin
  • 1/2 cup fresh Fruit juice, pick the one that's right for your skin type*

How to do it:

Put the gelatin and fruit juice in a small pan and slowly heat it up over a small fire, while constantly stirring, until the gelatin is dissolved completely

Place the bowl in the fridge until it is firm and almost set but still liquid enough to be applied; this will take about 20 to 30 minutes

Stir to see if it is the right thick consistency, if so spread the paste gently and equally with a facial mask brush or spatula on your clean face and neck; keep the eye and upper lip area clear

Now lie down, relax and leave the mask on until it gets dry

Then peel it off, start under your chin and peel it off in an upward motion, this will tingle a bit. Finally rinse with fresh cold water; pat your skin dry with a clean towel

*Which juice?

For normal to dry skin use peach, raspberry, apple, papaya, pear or strawberry juice, or combine some of these.

For oily skin use lemon, lime, carrot, orange, grapefruit, tomato or white grape juice, or combine some of these

Herbal tea, Fruit juice, Gelatine face mask
(For all skin types)

A gelatine face mask with herbal tea infusion for extra power

What do you need:

  • 1 packet unflavored Gelatin
  • 1/4 cup fresh Fruit juice, pick the one that's right for your skin type
  • 1/4 cup Herbal infusion Tea

How to do it:

Make a herbal infusion tea with your herb of choice and strain it. Pour the warm herbal tea together with the fruit juice and the gelatin in a small pan. Then gently warm this mixture up over a slow fire, while constantly stirring, until the gelatin is completely dissolved

Let this cool down for a while and place the bowl in the fridge until it is firm and almost set but still liquid enough to be applied; this will take about 30-40 minutes

Making face masks

Egg white, Milk, Gelatine face mask
(For all skin types)

A gelatine face mask with herbal tea infusion for extra power

What do you need:

  • 1 tablespoon unflavored Gelatin
  • 1,5 tablespoon whole Milk
  • 1 Egg white

How to do it:

Mix the milk and gelatin in a pan over a small fire, while stirring constantly, until the gelatin is dissolved. Remove it from the heat source and let it cool down just a little bit. Then add the egg white and mix until you have a smooth substance that is cool enough to touch

Quickly, before it starts to set in the pan, but gently spread the substance equally but not too thick with a facial mask brush or spatula on your clean face and neck; keep the eye and upper lip area clear

Now lie down, relax and leave the mask on until it gets dry, this will take about 30 minutes

Then peel it off, start under your chin and peel it off in an upward motion, this will tingle a bit. Finally rinse with lukewarm water; pat your skin dry with a clean towel

A small word of caution: before you apply any mask, we recommend you do a patch test on a small piece of skin (e.g. behind the ear) to test your sensitivity to it
