homemade aftershave

We have the recipe you bring the energy

…and the ingredients plus some kitchen utensils please

Some of these homemade aftershaves include a good swag of Rum or Vodka, that must be to get into the mood before a good night out... I guess. You might have to convince that police officer that it is your homemade aftershave they are smelling…

Which basic ingredients are useful for a homemade aftershave?

Basically the sky’s the limit, you can try whatever you want; that is, always keep the purpose of an aftershave in mind. There are however some ingredients that seem to return more regularly in these aftershave recipes

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is mostly known for its astringent properties. This means that it has the ability to tighten and tone your skin. It is also anti-microbial, meaning that it helps preventing infections by keeping cuts and other small wounds clean

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is the queen of skin soothers and healers

Glycerin

An effective humectant, which means it attracts moisture to your skin and keeps it there. It’s a good solvent, many things dissolve easier into glycerin than in water or alcohol. Diluted with water, it will soften your skin

Alcohol

Alcohol can help increase penetration of key ingredients in an aftershave recipe. Some alcohols also act as slip agents, hydrators and/or emollients

Flower essence

Flower essences are herbal infusions or decoctions, made from the flowering part of the plant

Essential oil

Essential oil is a concentrated liquid that carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant in question

Herbs & Spices

Cloves, Allspice, Rosemary, Chamomile, Lavender, Sage, Bay leaves, Cinnamon, Mint etc. bring their aroma and skin treating properties to a homemade aftershave

Zest

Zest adds some zest to the aftershave recipes (it’s too easy, sorry … ;-)
Orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit zest can all be used mostly for their fragrance but also for their cleaning and toning qualities

Jamaican Rum Bay Homemade aftershave

"Arrr matey, let's board the ship, set fire to the loot and send it to the bottom of the big drink..."

Thus spoke Captain RedBeard at the Montego Bay anti-shaving aficionado conference...

What do you need:

  • 2 cups Witch Hazel extract
  • 2 tablespoons Jamaican Rum
  • teaspoon Bay essential oil (+/- 32 drops - Pimenta racemosa)
  • Orange zest (from one orange, organic preferably)
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 4 Cloves
  • 4 whole Allspice

How to do it:

First grate the orange peel until you have enough zest. Then break and crush the cinnamon stick. Put the zest and the rest in a bowl and add the rum

Put everything in a sealable jar, add the witch hazel and after that the Bay essential oil

Close the jar tightly and shake well to mix and distribute the ingredients and then store it. For the next 4 to 6 weeks you have to shake it well every day

When it is done, pour the mixture through a strainer to take out the herbs and spices and you’re left with your very own private homemade aftershave

It is best to store it in dark colored bottles to keep the light from affecting your creation

Tip: if you have sensitive skin add half a teaspoon of Aloe Vera and/ or half a teaspoon of Glycerin

Some words of Caution

A lot of fruits contain citric acid. Lemon, lime and orange (juice) in specific. When you use them in a skin treatment always be careful with how much you use. Too much can cause acid burns. Also if you have sensitive skin be extra aware with these ingredients

Same goes for all essential oils, this is really powerful stuff; be very careful what and how much you use

Because you can never be too careful when it comes to your skin, always do a patch test on a small piece of skin (e.g. behind the ear) to see how your skin reacts to separate ingredients
