We have the recipe you bring the energy …and the ingredients of course
Why homemade toothpaste, what's in it for me ...or my teeth?
We could answer this but we thought to leave that to THE international authority on dental care Dr. Paul H. Keyes. His research showed that there are a few very, and he means VERY useful ingredients you can use in your personal dental hygiene routine. Some are even much more useful than most commercial toothpastes
Dr. Keyes, by the way, is the founder of the International Dental Health Foundation
We reserved a separate page for his arguments about natural homemade dental hygiene. His findings and recommendations on some specific ingredients should convince everybody to start using them yesterday. Click here to find out yourself
To give you a little sneak preview, he states that there is almost no commercial product sold out there that can outperform these natural ingredients that many people already have in their kitchen cabinets

Homemade Toothpaste recipes
For those who didn’t read Dr. Keyes’ suggestions we will give you the most useful ingredients for homemade toothpaste and a short description
Which kitchen cabinet ingredients are good to use in a natural homemade toothpaste?
Homemade toothpaste ingredient Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) - A mild abrasive that dissolves easily. In solution it will kill microorganisms and disease related bacteria. It will also neutralize and detoxify the bacterial acids and toxins that form in plaques
Homemade toothpaste ingredient Sodium chloride (table salt) - Salt can be used alone or in combination. It is not highly abrasive. In solution at higher concentrations it will kill on contact all microorganisms associated with infections in your mouth. Its antibacterial potential, while good, is not as powerful as that of sodium bicarbonate, and it will not detoxify bacterial byproducts
Homemade toothpaste ingredient Glycerin - Glycerin has an antibacterial potential, which is not well recognized. If a drop of glycerin is added to living bacterial dental plaque, they stop moving and working instantly
Homemade toothpaste ingredient Hydrogen peroxide – When hydrogen peroxide comes into contact with bacterial plaques, it breaks down very rapidly into oxygen and water. This helps to break up and destroy the thin bacterial layer on tooth surfaces, and it shows the places where bacteria are located. When used as an ingredient, it has little, if any, bactericidal action. It breaks down too rapidly
Homemade toothpaste ingredient Vinegar - A half strength solution of vinegar will freeze all bacteria, and it will help to dissolve deposits of hardened plaque. Brushing several times a week with a vinegar solution can help to prevent this hardened plaque formation
Homemade toothpaste ingredient Cranberry juice - Unsweetened cranberry juice can be used as mouthwash and as a solution for brushing your teeth. It will kill all moving bacteria on contact and help to break down plaques. Since it is somewhat acidic, it should not be used more than a few times a week. It is pleasant to use and can be swallowed. This juice can be used as a rinse and then swallowed or spit out. Brushing the teeth with cranberry juice leaves the teeth and mouth feeling very fresh and clean
Homemade toothpaste ingredient Neutrogena Soap (unscented) - When a solution of this soap comes into contact with the moving microorganisms in plaques, they almost instantly stop working and moving. To use, rub dry or moisten bristles over a bar of this soap. The unscented type tastes soapy. The scented tastes terrible
Homemade toothpaste ingredient Weak solution of sodium hypochlorite (e.g. Clorox) - One teaspoon in a pint of water provides a very powerful irrigation solution (DO NOT INGEST!). The taste is very unpleasant, but it can be very effective for persons who have been treated for periodontal diseases. Brushing the teeth with baking soda after using this solution will rapidly neutralize its taste. Then you can rinse with a pleasant tasting mouthwash
This simply sealed the deal for us and started trying some things out, the rest is history
Add a fresh taste and smell to your toothpaste recipe
Our own experience has taught us that sometimes you want to add something to improve the taste and smell. Things like
Peppermint oil
Vanilla oil
Cinnamon oil
Cinnamon powder
Clove oil
Anise oil
Wintergreen oil
Orange Peel, dried and ground
Lemon Peel, dried and ground
Lime Peel, dried and ground
Mint leaves, finely chopped
Sage leaves, finely chopped
Stevia leaves, dried and ground
Add only a few drops or just a little bit of the ingredient you want to use to improve the taste and smell of this tooth paste recipe; just carefully experiment a bit
Note: whatever ingredient you use make sure it is always food grade quality, that means it can be consumed
