Why a honey face mask, what’s in it for me …or my skin?
Did you ever try a honey mask or used honey in your skin care regime? If you did you know exactly what is in it for you
Honey is a humectant, which means it will attract and keep moisture inside your skin, there where it belongs. This hydration makes that your skin becomes supple, elastic and silky soft
It also has anti-oxidant properties which play an important role in protecting your skin against damage from UV (ultra violet) sun light. Just that you know, the darker the honey the stronger the anti-oxidant effect
There are many, many different sorts of honey, you have: Acacia, Basswood, Blueberry, Linden, Wildflower, Orange blossom to name just a few. All of them with their own specific taste and qualities
Simply try and use a honey face mask and convince yourself

Some useful tips
Before applying any facial mask clean your face and neck with fresh water. Take off all cosmetics, creams, lotions, in short: everything. Use a non abrasive, non aggressive soap if necessary. When finished, pat your skin dry
Even better is to take a hot shower or a steam bath to clean and open up your pores. For some useful steam bath suggestions & tips check our steam bath page
When you have applied the honey mask of choice make sure you take your time to lie down, place a towel under your head and neck. Put 2 cucumber slices on your eyes; or use 2 used and cooled down chamomile teabags (our personal favorite!) or 2 cotton pads soaked in rose or lavender water
But most important:
Think positive, happy thoughts and relax... this is actually half of the secret of these recipes!

Homemade facial masks
Basic Honey face mask (For all skin types)
When you're going to make a honey face mask, organic honey seems to be just a bit more powerful than the regular ones, that's why we prefer to use certified organic honeys
What do you need:
organic Honey
How to do it:
What you do is you warm up the honey until it becomes liquid (not too hot!) by putting it in a small glass or metal bowl which is immersed in hot water. This way you have more control and it doesn't burn
When it is nice and warm smooth the honey gently and equally with a facial mask brush or spatula on your clean face and neck; keep the eye area clear
Now lie down, relax and leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes
Then wash it off with warm water, end with a splash of cold; pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Finally apply a moisturizer, this way you "seal" your skin to keep the water inside

Frozen Egg, Honey face mask (For dry skin)
This honey mask is actually a gigantic frozen "chapstick" or honey-icicle, and is particularly soothing on a sunburnt skin
What do you need:
1 tablespoon organic Honey
1 Egg
1/2 cup Coconut oil
How to do it:
Whip the egg until you have a nice and smooth froth. Heat up the coconut oil until it melts, don't let it get hot. Slowly add the molten liquid coconut oil and honey to the whipped egg. Mix gently until you get a nice uniform cream
This is the tricky part; you will have to make sort of an enormous frozen "chapstick" from this mixture so you can easily apply it later. You can use a toilet roll that stands up right in a small bowl, pour and scoop the mixture in the roll. You could also use an empty deodorant stick or something alike that works for you. Put this in the freezer overnight
Take the stick out of the freezer and apply it to your clean face and neck; keep the eye area clear
Now lie down, relax and leave the mask on for 5-10 minutes
Then wash it off with a warm wet wash cloth and warm water, end with a splash of cold; pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Finally apply a moisturizer, this way you "seal" your skin to keep the water inside
You can wrap the stick in plastic and put it back in the freezer for next time

Now lie down, relax and leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes
Then wash it off with alternately cold and warm water and end with a splash of cold; pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Finally apply a moisturizer, this way you "seal" your skin to keep the water inside
