Preventing Hangovers
there's more than just not drinking…

Every body knows that preventing hangovers is actually quiet simple:

Don't drink alcohol!

preventing hangovers, don't drink alcohol...yeah sure

With this we could have closed the page that's it, end of discussion.....

But of course we're not going to, it's just that we HAD to say this, and now that we got the very obvious out of the way we can go on

There are some things you can do for preventing hangovers or at least trying to keep them within limits. It's worth a try if you want to go easy on the hangover cures in the morning. These are surefire preventions, you just have to find which one is yours

Preventing hangovers:

Followed by the inevitable:

Preventing Hangovers
Before you start drinking

Somewhere at some point there must have been a president or a general or a football, baseball or basketball coach who said: "Preparation is half the battle" or "preparation is the key to success;" if not then we just did. You can go for one of the following and try to minimize your miserableness in the morning

preventing hangovers

Preventing hangovers (during drinking)

Drink a glass of milk before you start drinking. Milk slows down the absorption of alcohol, so there is less acetaldehyde for the body to deal with at any one time

Make sure you take the full fat version, it works a lot better than the low or no fat versions

Preventing hangovers (during drinking)

Good meal

Eat a good meal. Having food in the stomach, particularly proteins, fats and dense carbohydrates, slows the absorption process of alcohol into your blood. So alcohol on an empty stomach gets you drunk more quickly

Preventing hangovers (during drinking)

Hydrate yourself, which means no more than try to drink a few glasses of water or fruit juice. This prepares your body for the dehydration process and the loss of vitamins and electrolytes later on. It will not solve all your hangover problems in the morning but every glass you gulp down before is worth two in the morning

Preventing hangovers (during drinking)

Preparing a hangover cure

If you're absolutely sure you are going to need it later on, prepare a hangover cure of choice. You will thank yourself in the morning for not having to crawl around half dead looking for the right ingredients

We know it's not really prevention, but it makes life so much easier the day after

Preventing Hangovers
During drinking

Now that you're prepared let's go to step 2, the things you can do during drinking to try and keep that steamroller in the morning in check

Preventing hangovers (during drinking)

Choosing wisely

Choose your drink wisely. Try to avoid darker drinks and the cheap booze especially the darker colored ones

Preventing hangovers (during drinking)

The mother of all alcohol advice, try to moderate your alcohol intake. One glass per hour is what your system normally can take

Preventing hangovers (during drinking)

Take a glass of water or fruit juice in between alcoholic drinks. Works two ways, first you won't drink as much alcohol because you're full, second the liquids will keep you from dehydrating

Things you should avoid

Avoiding hangovers (during drinking)

Try to avoid alcohol & bubbles

The carbon dioxide in bubbly drinks like champagne and rum coke makes the alcohol go into your blood more quickly, so unless you want to be down before the lights go on try to minimize

Avoiding hangovers (during drinking)

Don't Mix

Try to stay on one type of alcoholic drink. Mixing and drinking different sorts will make your hangover symptoms only more devilish

Avoiding hangovers (during drinking)

No sugar

Try to keep away from the sugary drinks and food. It keeps you from tasting how much you are drinking and the metabolism of sugar and alcohol speeds up the vitamin B depletion which makes the hangover symptoms way worse in the morning

Preventing Hangovers
Before you try to go to sleep or pass out

We guess you made it safely home, doesn't really matter how but you're here. Now is the last time you can try and keep the hangover symptoms to a minimum. Give these suggestions a shot

Preventing hangovers (before sleeping or passing out)

If you have to toss your cookies please do so, like we explained earlier although it might not feel that way, but this is the body's useful and healthy way to get the toxins out of your system

Preventing hangovers (before sleeping or passing out)

Drink more!

...And NO not another beer or whiskey, but water, a glass or 2 or as many as you can hold in. Fruit juices or sports drinks also work, keeps you from further dehydrating

preventing hangovers, drink more...water!

Preventing hangovers (before sleeping or passing out)

Vitamin B

If you prepared well than you have some vitamin B pill ready, this will help re hydrating and ease the hangover

Preventing hangovers (before sleeping or passing out)

Eat a banana before you go to sleep, it eases your stomach and puts back some vitamins and minerals you lost

Preventing Hangovers
Alcohol and Hangover DON'TS

Some things you better don't do when taking alcohol and avoiding hangovers. Some of these we already mentioned above but we want to stress them because they can be important for your and other people's health

Alcohol and hangover DON'TS

NEVER, EVER, EVER drink and drive!! Or fly an airplane or drive a boat for that matter...NEVER, don't even putt!

preventing hangovers

Alcohol and hangover DON'TS

Binge drinking is NOT cool and VERY dangerous

It seriously ruins your system, it can cause acute pancreatitis, a painful and potentially life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas, or even "holiday heart syndrome," an irregular heart rhythm found in heart-healthy people who have overindulged

Alcohol and hangover DON'TS

Not too much coffee / caffeine

When you wake up with a gigantic hangover you're likely to go for the quick cup of coffee and it just might help a bit. The coffee helps to reduce the swelling of blood vessels that causes headache

However caffeine is a diuretic which means that it makes you pee even more, so if you drink too much of it you will loose even more fluids...and that is a big NO NO in hangover country

Alcohol and hangover DON'TS

No sugar

Try to keep away from the sugary drinks and food. It keeps you from tasting how much you are drinking and the metabolism of both sugar and alcohol speeds up the vitamin B depletion which makes the hangover symptoms way worse in the morning

Alcohol and hangover DON'TS

Avoid alcohol and bubbles

Remember? The carbon dioxide in bubbly drinks like champagne and rum coke makes the alcohol go into your blood more quickly

Alcohol and hangover DON'TS

Don't mix

Try to stay on one type of alcoholic drink. Mixing and drinking different sorts will make your hangover symptoms only more devilish

Alcohol and hangover DON'TS

No pain killers

preventing hangovers, no aspirin

Although you want to eliminate that headache ASAP don't take aspirin, aspirin and alcohol are a very bad combination, it might take care of the headache but it does nothing for your alcohol level in your system

Just like alcohol aspirin is a blood thinner and it can make the alcohol effects even worse and it upsetsyour stomach

Tylenol (or acetaminophen) in combination with the alcohol in your blood can do very serious damage to your liver. Ibuprofen and alcohol can also cause stomach bleeding

Don't go for this fast painkiller relief

Alcohol and hangover DON'TS

Stay away from the "hair of the dog..."

The "hair of the dog that bit you" remedy means you take another alcoholic drink right after you wake up with a hangover. The idea behind this is that the alcohol in your new drink will leap in line to be broken down before all that was left in your blood from yesterday. This gives you a short reprieve from those monstrous hangover symptoms

However as soon as the drink is broken down the hangover will be back…with a vengeance. Your body has now extra toxins to take care of so the hangover will only be worse

We do not recommend this method since it also seems a very slippery road towards alcohol dependency

Half in jest but also half serious: If after a night of partying you wake up in someone's bathtub and the glass next to your head filled half with beer and half cigarette butts still looks attractive, then you have a serious alcohol problem. Please call your local AA group

The "I Hate to say I told you so" part

Finally you reached the "hate to say I told you so" part, the part where we sound like your and our parents

Now it's time to confront you with the fact that drinking too much alcohol is not particularly good for your system...and to make fun of the fact that you ignored all the good advice and almost drank yourself into oblivion

Well here it is:

'I hate to say I told you so!'

Well that's done then, to have some more fun (but not at your expense this time) we added a few jokes. Also to remember that alcohol (provided that it is used moderately...) sometimes makes life a bit more cheerful

'I have never been drunk, but often I've been overserved'

You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on

Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut

I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza

Things that are difficult to say when you're drunk:

  • Indubitably
  • Innovative
  • Preliminary
  • Proliferation
  • Cinnamon

Things that are VERY difficult to say when you're drunk:

  • Specificity
  • British Constitution
  • Passive-aggressive disorder
  • Loquacious Transubstantiate

Things that are downright impossible to say when you're drunk:

  • Sorry, but you’re not really my type
  • Thanks, but I don’t want to have sex
  • Nope, no more booze for me
  • Good evening officer, isn’t it lovely out tonight
  • Oh I couldn’t, nobody wants to hear me sing
