It all stops here, we have got some amazingly powerful, proven and effective home remedies for blackheads. You will find ways for removing blackheads that will help you get your clear and smooth skin back

Most ingredients for these blackhead removal remedies you probably already have at home somewhere in your kitchen or medicine cabinet. They are easy to apply and very powerful. And if you don't have them, most are very affordable or downright cheap, so nothing will stop you from getting the cleanest and smoothest skin possible

Let's get started then, first a short explanation, then

What are blackheads?

Blackheads, or 'open comedones' as they are medically called, are actually the first stage of acne. They are formed before bacteria get into the pores of your skin that will finally result in an infection and inflammation; this we all know as the infamous pimple

In this first "blackhead stage" the oil glands, or sebaceous glands, in your skin are stimulated to produce too much oil in your pores. This over-production of oil together with dead skin cells, dust and other dirt in the air and on your skin plug your pores…and lo and behold…here's your blackhead

Blackheads can turn up basically everywhere but they tend to prefer your face, back and shoulders, this because there you have the highest concentration of sebaceous follicles. Although they show up in almost any skin type, they are most likely to develop on people with very oily skin

Even though blackheads are a type of acne; you can't treat them exactly like other acne types. Each type of acne should be treated in its own specific way

Acne and blackheads are very common

Did you know that acne and blackheads are the most common skin diseases treated by physicians? It is a chronic condition and affects over 85% of adolescents and young adults. Studies have revealed that 2/3 of all teenagers with acne or blackheads wanted to talk to their doctor about this, but only 1/3 actually did

Symptoms of blackheads

Well the symptoms of blackheads seem very obvious, you were looking at them just a few moments ago in the mirror

They are by themselves not a serious condition but they definitely can ruin the look of your skin and not to mention your confidence

The nice black color is a result of the sebum (the excess oil from your glands) coming into contact with the oxygen in the air, this is called oxidation. Sometimes though they are covered by a tiny amount of skin that prevents this contact with air, so then they keep a yellowish, white color

What causes blackheads?

Most of the times when you know more about the causes of a condition it is also easier to treat it. So what causes blackheads can give you an indication of where to start with treating the outbreak you're looking at

If you get them or not you partly inherit it from your parents. So unless you can go back in time and change your biological parents there's unfortunately nothing you can do about this one

blackheads causes hormones

Boys have a high level of a specific hormone called androgens, this takes care of the physical transformation from boys into men. That's why they also have more serious outbreaks of acne andblackheads. Just before and during puberty your hormones get a kick in the behind and start working overtime

On the other hand, women can have outbreaks linked to their menstrual cycle and also when they are pregnant. They both cause serious changes in hormone levels making women more vulnerable to acne in these periods

Poor hygiene or not cleaning your skin well enough can be another cause of blackheads. Dead skin cells build up in the pores clogging them and causing oil build up

Too much oil is not really what you want but too much cleaning on the other hand also isn't good, just like too much of any good thing. When you over-wash it will result in a reflex of the oil glands going into over activity. This in turn will clog up your pores again. Washing two times a day is more than enough for most people

blackheads causes cosmetics

Using too much make up, moisturizers, foundations or sun screen can also clog up your pores. They mix with your body oils and block the whole pores. Try to cut down or even stop using them

A good thing to remember is that whatever you put on your face, make sure you take it off before you go to bed. and again: do not over-wash or clean

Picking or squeezing your skin

This will also irritate your skin and results in a reflex of the oil glands going into over activity. This in turn will clog up your pores again

Since blackheads and acne in general can be caused by an imbalance of your hormones, and stress levels affect your hormone levels, stress can cause acne or blackheads. But don't worry too much about this one it might cause stress and…well more acne

Environmental pollution

There's a lot of bad stuff in the air, dust and all kinds of other pollution can clog your pores, especially when not cleaned well enough

In humid conditions you start to sweat, this sweat mixes with the oil on your skin and together with too tight, non breathing clothes this can lead to acne and blackheads

food causes blackheads

There is no hard scientific proof for the fact that certain kinds of food can cause acne and blackheads. But doctors and dermatologists still believe that an unhealthy diet can certainly have a serious impact on your skin

Also vitamin A has proven to be very important for the health of your skin. So eating a healthy diet with a lot of vegetables and fruit, wholewheat bread, brown rice and pasta, lots of water, and less sugar and white flour products can be very helpful, not only for your skin but for your health in general

And to all of you who eat whatever they want and still are in good shape and have perfect skin we say: "Go back to Krypton!!"

Some prescribed medications like lithium or steroid products can cause your pores to block which can lead to blackheads

How to safely remove them

Although removing blackheads by yourself is not the best long term solution, we can imagine that sometimes it's just too much. You can't stand to look at them any more and immediate blackhead removal feels like the only option. In this first part of home remedies for blackheads we will talk about several safe ways on how to remove blackheads

Blackheads home remedies

Special blackhead or comedone removers

home remedies for blackheads comedone remover

Please don't go at them with tweezers, needles or pins or any sharp and unhygienic objects. These will damage your skin tissue and can cause skin infections making the situation only worse

For removing blackheads immediately by yourself buy a blackhead or comedone remover. These are specifically designed to safely get them out

When you use one make sure that there is no infection on or around the blackhead and that your remover is sterile. Keep some sterile gauze or swabs at hand to remove the extracted blackheads and clean the skin

Make it easier on yourself

To make the whole process a bit more comfortable we recommend steaming your face for a few minutes before you start removing. There are a few ways you can do this

home remedies for blackheads steaming

  • You could buy a facial steamer; these are specially designed for this job
  • Or you can boil some water, put the pan in front of you and put your face over the steam holding a towel over your head to keep the steam in. This will open up and loosen the pores which makes the whole process less painful. Do we need to say to be very careful with boiling water, steam and your face…don't scold yourself
  • You could also take a hot shower, close the doors and windows and turn the shower as hot as you can stand it. The steam in your bathroom will also open up your pores
  • Our final suggestion is to put a warm compress on your face for about 10 to 15 minutes. This will also soften the blackheads, making it easier to remove them. Make sure the cloth or towel you use is clean

Steam and steam baths can be a wonderful thing for your skin, so we have put together some steam bath ideas for when the mood or the need hits us. If you want you can check them on our steam bath benefits page

Remove with your fingers and tissues

Although we do not recommend this way for removing blackheads we know and understand that you can be pretty determined to get them out now. You just want to pop the blackheads with your fingers because you simply can't leave them alone

Here is what is best to do: first clean your face with a gentle cleanser. Pat your face dry with a clean towel, then apply a facial steam or warm compress as described above. Pat your face dry again. Now put some tissues on the tip of each finger and gently put even pressure on the blackhead. Make sure you push down a little and then around the blackhead. You want to push the blackhead out from "underneath"

Only try this for one or two times. If it doesn't come out you may bruise the skin and make the blackhead worse. Besides that you could also cause a scar

When it does come out clean the place thoroughly

Home remedies for blackheads

Pore strips

You could use pore strips for removing blackheads. But this is not one of the treatments we support. Only for use on the nose they can be an alternative and only then when there is no swelling, irritation, sunburn, or very dry skin. Repeated use can also cause irritation and even more outbreaks of blackheads. And finally it can tear or injure your skin

If you are determined to use these strips carefully read the information that comes with the box

In general we think that using a long term treatment by eating a healthy diet, using proper hygiene using mild cleansers or one of the suggested home remedies for blackheads we list below, is better than the simple short term extraction

This long term blackhead removal method makes them go away by themselves; this will get you the best long term results

That being said,  we also know that most of us don't have the patience to follow through and want fast results or you only need an occasional blackhead to be removed. For these situations we recommend the home remedies for blackheads above

If you are not sure if you can get those blackheads out safely by yourself, go to a professional

Preventive home remedies for blackheads

We hoped it was already clear, but just to be sure. When you want to prevent acne and blackheads, good skin hygiene is a sure way to keep them far away. It is so obvious that some people simply "forget" about it and start on some wild chase for that miracle treatment

Clean your face maximum twice a day with a gentle facial cleaner or one of our suggestions above. If really necessary, you can clean your face during the rest of the day with a splash of clean water

Preventive home remedies for blackheads

Warm moisturizing or damping your face

Moisturizing or dampening your face with a steam bath or warm cloth every evening for 15 to 25 minutes can be very effective. It loosens dead skin, dirt and other stuff that blocks your pores by opening them up

Look at some of the ideas on how to steam your face

Preventive home remedies for blackheads

Salicylic acid

It might sound a bit too chemical to you but it's perfectly OK. Salicylic acid is a natural acid that is taken from the bark of the willow tree (salix in Latin.) This organic acid exfoliates your skin, which will make it easier for dead and dying skin to be taken off and will open up your pores. The blackheads will then come to the surface so you can remove them easier if necessary

Preventive home remedies for blackheads

Take excess oil out

When you have a very oily skin you can take the excess oil away with a clay mask like we mentioned above. This mask will prevent your pores being clogged by this oil. Make sure the mask does not contain mint or peppermint or anything else that can irritate your skin

For people with dry skin this mask method is not so useful

Preventive home remedies for blackheads

Don't use oil based makeup and skin products

Oil based skin products mix with the oil from your skin and clog your pores on a regular basis. These oil based skin products are almost impossible for your body to break down naturally. Water based products on the other hand are much better to use. Use the "non-clog" type of products

Preventive home remedies for blackheads

Don't use harsh abrasives

home remedies for blackheads

Scrubbing you face with hard abrasives, harsh chemicals or those special skin scrubbing cloths will irritate your skin. This causes even more acne and blackhead problems because your skin reacts to this by trying to repair the damage you've done. This will clog up your pores with skin oil and puss

For instance don't use bar soap! The stuff that keeps soap in a bar form can clog the pores in your skin. They can also cause your skin cells to flake off before it's their time and clog the pores

If you have dry skin it is better that you use a cleanser that has a bit of moisturizer in it. But as always be careful, too much moisturizer can cause over production of oil on your skin

Preventive home remedies for blackheads

Vitamin A

Healthy skin needs vitamin A (also known as retinol.) When you eat a normal healthy diet you probably get enough of it in your system. But just in case, good sources of vitamin A include:

  • cheese
  • eggs
  • oily fish (such as mackerel)
  • milk
  • fortified margarine
  • yogurt

Liver is one of the richest sources of vitamin A. If you eat it once a week it is more than enough

If you are pregnant or think of having a baby, don't eat liver or vitamin A supplements simply because of the amount of vitamin A it contains, this can harm your unborn baby

Final Note

Remember that all people still are individuals just as all cases of blackheads can be different. What works for one person in one situation might not work for another. So don't despair if a home remedy doesn't immediately work for you, you can try another one probably with more success

The home remedies for blackheads we suggested should basically take care of the normal simple blackhead cases. If however these treatments do not work and they don't get rid of those blackheads or it gets worse, contact an esthetician. In case of more serious acne or skin disorders contact your doctor or dermatologist
