Yes, it’s the season again and coughing isn’t the fun part of it, as we all know. You (or your child) are coughing as we speak, a nasty dry cough or one where you cough up mucus or phlegm? I know the constant coughing can be as annoying as hell...(pardon my french, but when you have a nasty bouts of coughing your borders move downward I'm afraid)

First your throat starts to hurt, then your head and maybe even chest and back. You can’t function properly and you may even have problems falling asleep. But the good thing is that it can be remedied with these natural coughing cures

Over the counter meds or better not?

Yes there are over the counter medicines, but there is some crazy stuff out there. For some of those it feels like you’re shooting a mosquito with an elephant gun. They can also make you feel drowsy and drunk or give you side effects that are just as annoying as the cough you’re fighting. Most importantly they are not cheap, whereas home remedies for coughing can be made with ingredients you probably have lying around in your kitchen

Don't let this cough ruin your day, these coughing cures can stop it right here, right now!

What is coughing?

Coughing is your body’s way of getting rid of something that is irritating your air passages. Constant coughing may be what they call productive, meaning you cough up mucus or phlegm. When you cough up greenish, brown or grey mucus it is most likely caused by a bacterial infection. When the mucus is white it is probably because of an allergic reaction or viral infection. If however you cough up blood you must immediately contact your doctor since this is extremely serious

Your cough can also be unproductive, meaning it’s a dry, grating or rasping cough

What causes coughing?

First of all coughing is often a symptom of an underlying condition, not a condition by itself, so there can be many causes for your cough; too much to talk about them here in detail. We will go over the main ones

  • A common cold (or other viral respiratory infections; cough is triggered by mucus that drains down the back of the throat)
  • Postnasal drip (again a nasal discharge trickles into the back of your throat
  • Bacterial respiratory infections
  • Food or foreign object in the windpipe
  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Heartburn (Acid Reflux or GERD)
  • Smoking
  • Allergies
  • Environmental pollutants (smog, dust, fumes, smoke)
  • Side effect of medicine (Beta blockers and ACE inhibitors)

You can either cough voluntarily or involuntarily, why this is important to know we will explain later

There are about as many home remedies for cough out there then there are coughs, so you have to find the one that works for you, and you will, don’t worry…

Home Remedies for Coughing

Before you use any home remedies for coughing you have to identify your cough. Determine what caused it and where it came from. This will make it easier to fight your cough. In the end it's best to fight the cause of your cough

These coughing cures are however very effective and should relieve you of your cough without any problems. They are tried and proven by many people before you. So give it a try

Home remedies for coughing

Honey & Lemon

This time proven home remedy for coughing is probably more effective than any other over-the-counter remedy out there. Honey has been used for many centuries in Chinese medicine against coughs; it promotes the flow of mucus, which eases coughing

Together honey and lemon also coat your upper airways and so locally block your cough reflex

Dissolve 1 tablespoon of honey in a cup of hot water, add 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice (or as much as you can handle)

Drink it every 2 hours

Granny's chicken soup

Is granny’s chicken soup against cold and coughing an old wives tale, is it fact or fiction?

Well to tell you the truth it may work better for you than any over-the-counter cough remedy. Some studies have suggested that chicken soup can actually help reduce the symptoms of colds and coughs. Wow, waddayousay, it’s true!!

Scientists do believe that chicken soup contains anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent some of a cold's nasty side effects, and one of them happens to be coughing. Chicken soup also contains cysteine, an ingredient that makes phlegm thinner

The saltiness keeps you hydrated and the steam soothes irritated membranes and airways…and did I mention that when it is prepared at home and in the right ‘Grandma way’ it tastes delicious as well

There is however a small footnote: chicken soup works great, but really anything hot, savory, tasty and a bit spicy (the spicier the better) helps promote salivation and the production of mucus, which will soothe a cough

Home remedies for coughing

Ginger & Honey

Ginger stimulates salivation and mucus secretion, which can relieve you from your cough

Mix a tablespoon of ground ginger with a tablespoon of honey. take this three times a day and after a while you should be good to go

You can also chew on some raw ginger or make a hot ginger drink by grating fresh ginger in hot water

Home remedies for coughing

Chili peppers (contain Capsaicin)

Eating a meal with a lot of chili peppers encourages your throat to produce calming secretions, which help ease your cough as well as the burning sensation of the peppers ;-)

Home remedies for coughing

Ginger & Cayenne

A variation on the ginger theme is to add some Cayenne pepper. Make a ginger drink by grating fresh ginger in hot water and add some cayenne pepper (how much depends on the person in question)

Yessss!! You read it right Chocolate; this is your excuse to stock up on chocolate with the ultimate excuse that it is a home remedy for cough. Chocolate stimulates the production of saliva and mucus, which in their turn soothe your cough

Some studies have shown that the ingredient theobromine in chocolate was even more effective in relieving coughs than were more common treatments. So Chocolate here I come!!

Home remedies for coughing

This home remedy for cough won’t gain you any friends during the treatment, but I guess coughing in someone’s face also won’t ;-)

Garlic is nature’s very own antibiotic and also has antiviral properties. It also helps you cough up stubborn bacteria and/or mucus that are using your lungs as a nice, warm and comfortable vacation resort

Problem is, you have to eat it raw and in some quantity to be effective. Eating 4 to 8 raw cloves a day (recommended) might be a tall task for many. Easier is to cut them raw through a salad or add them at the last moment to your sauce, (chicken) soup or whatever it is you’re making. This way it won’t spoil the garlic’s effectiveness

Another way is to make garlic broth. Smash 3 fresh garlic cloves; add these to 2 quarts (2 liter) of water in a pot. Boil this on a low fire for about one hour. Take it off the fire and let it cool down a bit. Then strain it and keep the liquid in a sealed bottle. Take sips from this throughout the day

Turmeric & Milk

How to stop coughing? Mix 2 teaspoons of fresh turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk. Drink it 2 to 3 times a day. Especially helpful fighting a cough caused by bacterial infections

Home remedies for coughing

Turmeric, Honey & Black pepper

One of the basic home remedies for cough uses these basic ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of Turmeric
  • 1 tablespoon of Honey
  • 1 teaspoon of ground Black Pepper

Many folk remedies use licorice root as a cough remedy and against bronchial problems. Licorice not only tastes good it also soothes inflamed or irritated throats and stimulates draining mucus from the lungs

Real licorice or candy that's actually made with real licorice (it should say "licorice mass" on the label) works best

Boil 1 quart (1 liter) of water, in the meantime chop up a handful of licorice sticks. Take the pot of the fire and add the chopped up licorice. You can sweeten it up by adding 2 tablespoons of honey

Let it steep for at least a whole day

Drink throughout the day

One of the home remedies for coughing straight from the candy jar

Home remedies for coughing

Red Onion & Honey

A wonderful and proven sweet home remedy for coughing that will go down easily with children

  • 1 big Red Onion
  • (dark organic) Honey

Peel and cut the onion in horizontal slices and ‘rebuild’ the onion in a bowl, as you would make lasagna, by putting honey between each onion layer

Let it rest overnight. The following day collect the syrup at the bottom of the bowl, it works like a charm and doesn’t taste at all like onion. The children will love the sweet taste of it

We heard of someone who had a different approach to this one. She took a quarter of a Red Onion and half a cup of Honey and blended them together into a puree. Then strained the puree through a strainer. Slightly faster than the one above and just as effective so it seems

Another variation on this cough cure is to chop the onion, put it in a pot on a low fire, and add the honey. Leave it on the fire for 5 minutes. Let it cool down and ‘drink’ the syrup you collected from the bottom of the pot

Home remedies for coughing

Organic Almond paste or butter

Take a teaspoon of organic almond paste or butter. (Add half teaspoon of honey for taste if you like.) Take as often as needed

Home remedies for coughing

The wonderfully old fashioned ‘putting your head over a bowl of steamy hot water.’ Inhaling steam helps flush out mucus, and moisturizes dry, irritated airways. For extra effect you can add menthol or eucalyptus essential oil, a scoop of Mentholatum or Vicks VapoRub.

Boil a pot full of hot water, put it securely on a table and add the essential oil or Mentholatum or Vicks VapoRub stir until mixed properly

Drape a towel over your head and lean over the pot. Gently breathe the steam and vapors for 10 – 15 minutes

This can be very effective to clear your airways, calm down your cough and in the end soothe your throat

Need I say to be very careful with the boiling water? Didn’t think so…no one needs a boiled face

Home remedies for coughing

If you or your family are looking for coughing cures multiple times per year it might be interesting to invest in a vaporizer

Beware, you need a vaporizer not a humidifier; the first one blows steam (good) the last one clouds of cold mist (not good in this case)

Take one that has a reservoir to hold essential oils like eucalyptus or mint or Mentholatum or Vick's VapoRub

Follow the instructions that come with the vaporizer

Home remedies for coughing

  • 2 teaspoons freshly chopped Ginger Root

Vicks on your FEET!

This is one of the coughing cures that surprised us the most. It uses Vicks VapoRub by itself is not surprising, but you have to apply it to the bottom of your feet. Then put on some socks and go to bed

This way it heats up your feet, or enters the bloodstream sooner, or simply scares the cough away because it doesn't want to be associated with such a strange person...? We have no idea

Honestly, we didn’t try it yet but it sounds strange enough to work…let us know if you used it and how it worked

Home remedies for coughing

For adults only

As an adult you have more freedom to choose between coughing cures because of all the ingredients. This one is specifically for our older readers

  • 3 tablespoons of raw Honey

Slightly warm up the honey so it gets runny, put it together with the Lemon in a ½ pint bottle (0,25 L.) Fill the bottle to the top with the Bourbon Whiskey. Close the bottle and shake well to mix all ingredients

Take 2 tablespoons before you go to bed

Herbal Home remedies to stop coughing

One of the herbs for coughing, Echinacea is thought to have natural immune-boosting properties. It is a flower traditionally used by Native Americans to treat coughs, colds and sore throats

There is evidence that it can treat the common cold, which is the biggest culprit when it comes to coughing. It works however very slow, so when you’re looking for an immediate cough remedy you might want to try something else

Herbal home remedies for coughing

Herbal tea

Make a tea of Mullein, Marshmallow, Coltsfoot or Horehound and drink it while relaxing. This can easily soothe a cough. Especially Coltsfoot tea can help soothe that raspy cough that simply won’t go away

No, it’s no evil plot to control the world, let us explain. Remember we said we would explain about voluntarily and involuntarily coughing

When you cough, a lot of it is voluntarily. For some people thinking about coughing or the need to cough makes them actually cough more. Distract yourself with any occupation or by other means like hypnosis or meditation

Alternative Home remedies to stop coughing

In Homeopathy, Nux Vomica and Belladonna are both regularly prescribed for coughing. The first one is used for a hacking cough and belladonna for when you have that tickle in your throat

Sometimes it can have a very useful placebo effect as well. Because a lot of coughing is voluntary and thus psychological, a placebo effect is still very useful

Alternative Home remedies to stop coughing

Acupuncture has proven to be very useful against coughing. Certain acupuncture points are connected to the lungs and throat and when you stimulate them this can help to end the cough
